Debates about the second amendment and civilians’ rights are floating around constantly, and have been ever since the Las Vegas shooting.
Many people are trying to convince the public that firearms are only meant for hunting. This obviously negates the entire first part, which describes the necessity of a “well-regulated’ militia in order to defend the country we love so much.
What’s interesting is that people forget there was no U.S military at the time the second amendment was written. As such, this, to many, justifies the civilians’ rights of owning and operating firearms to defend ourselves.
Regardless, one thing we all must come together about is the idea that gun ownership is vital for our protection from outside enemies.
This is especially the case when you read a recent 432 page report from the Heritage Foundation. This report explains how our nation’s military is at its breaking point. So much so, in fact, that they would have a very difficult time defending our country from two regional forces at the exact same time.
This is especially frightening when you think about it this way: if our military is elsewhere defending us, and we suffer another attack from a separate country/group, our nation will be in grave danger as a result.
When you consider that our nation’s military is doing everything they can to protect us – and it’s still not enough – the most appropriate solution is to ensure that American civilians are protect themselves with firearms.
Despite an enormous defense budget, the Heritage Foundation reports that our military is actually getting weaker, rather than stronger. Part of this is because, as a nation, we have been involving ourselves in many international conflicts that are going on a lot longer than we thought.
However, the Heritage Foundation also reports that our nation’s army is simply too small to fulfill all of its tasks. Its equipment is also aging, making readiness more and more difficult. In terms of the Marine Corps, the Heritage Foundation states that they are facing ever-increasing stress and poor aviation readiness. This is causing their assessment rating to drop from “marginal” to “weak” in only a year’s time.
So what’s the cause for our military’s weakening status? The Heritage Foundation states that this is the result of underinvestment, cuts in funding, and poor execution of modern programs.
The lack of funding in particular is a concern, as defense spending has been decreasing ever since Barack Obama took office. Between 2010 and 2014, the defense budget decreased by a whopping 22%. Even now, we are 18% lower in defense spending than we were back in 2010.
After taking these things into consideration, one thing is perfectly clear. And that’s that Americans need to start taking matters into our own hands. After all, the creation of the second amendment allows Americans to maintain liberty and independence, even at a time when everything and everyone is against us.
This not only puts the power with the people, but it allows us civilians to stand up and fight, whether the military is here or abroad, and do our individual part to defend our great country.
