Not too long ago, Dick’s Sporting Goods changed their firearm sales policy as part of a knee jerk reaction to the Parkland, Florida school shootings.
Dick’s completely stopped selling magazines and modern sporting rifles. They also restricted the sale of all guns to buyers who are under 21. Gun grabbers have praised Dick’s for its firm stance on gun control.
However, it seems that political activism and business don’t mix that well because Dick’s is now dealing with the financial aftermath of their decision.
Dick’s is going through financial hard times because they’ve alienated their consumer base. It should come as no surprise that when you sell guns, your customers are gun owners…not anti-gunners!
No matter how much praise they get from anti-gunners, it’s gun owners who put money in Dick’s pockets.
But Dick’s either didn’t think it would have that much of an effect or completely overlooked it.
If you walk into a Dick’s store right now, you’ll see something rather funny. Since they no longer sell modern sporting rifles or magazines, they have a lot of open space that they need to fill with something else…
Imagine seeing an entire shelf dedicated only to a single product such as Remington Action Cleaner. This is what they have to do just to make it seem like they still have lots of inventory.
You’ll also see gun cases stacked on shelves the long way just to take up more space. They’ve also started spreading out the few guns that they still sell so they can still take up the entire display shelf.
Sure, the inside of their stores might look a little sparse nowadays, but what about their sales figures?
Dick’s posted a deeper-than-expected sales decline. Its stock sank the most in four months Tuesday in the wake of the quarterly report, which reflected struggles with excess inventory and deep discounting.
Dick’s stock price is right around their seven year low, having sunk as much as 5%.
Many gun owners are happy that Dick’s is being punished financially for their attack on the 2nd Amendment. Some of them have even vowed to never shop at Dick’s again.
It’s a good idea because this could discourage other companies from doing the same thing. And let’s be honest here…with such a limited inventory there’s not much reason to go to Dick’s Sporting Goods anymore in the first place.
They no longer sell magazines or America’s favorite rifle, the AR-15…so not many would need to go there in the first place.
